I was born Dec. 28 1951 in Minnesota but my family moved to Florida when I was very young. We lived in Cocoa where I went to high school and spent time surfing and building surfboards. I went to school at UF in Gainesville to study art and received a BFA degree in 1977.
I first made pottery as an apprentice to Bruce Green in 1973. I set up my own studio shortly after and had a store front in Micanopy in the 1980's. With my wife Donna and my children, Jai and Rosemary, we moved to Summer Haven (south of St. Augustine) in 1993. I have now been making pottery for over 40 years.
The wheel has always been my main tool and I learned fast. From my early work and throughout my career I have made functional stoneware. I like the hardness and durability of high fire and the connection with people when they use your mug every day.
But I found that I loved Raku firing with airbrushed underglazes, fast cooled crackle, and copper glazes. I've made a line of Raku landscape "art pots" for many years.
My latest body of work is about music. I make horns on the wheel in sections that sound like bugles, shofars, or didgeridos. Ocarinas that sound like recorders. Jug band sets that play a C major scale. I make four string guitars with cigar boxes or stoneware bodies, hardwood necks and electric pickups. I have begun to experiment with drums such as Djembes and Udus.
